Join the Buddy Walk to Raise Awareness for Down Syndrome

At 3rd Kind Customz, we do more than just offer collision repair and custom auto paint jobs, we get involved in our community. It's something that is important to us because without the community, we simply wouldn't enjoy the many successes we do.

One of our favorite events to sponsor is the Houston Buddy Walk to raise awareness for Down Syndrome. The 15th annual event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 11 at the Diamond Lot in Minute Maid Park in downtown Houston. Find out more about what makes this event so special and how you can get involved.

The Buddy Walk

The Buddy Walk was created in 1995 by the National Down Syndrome Society to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October. Organizers also hoped the event would promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome, which is why they named it the Buddy Walk.

In its first year, 17 events were planned across the country. The Buddy Walk has grown tremendously since then and is now the premier advocacy event for Down Syndrome in the U.S. From 2003 to 2013, the Buddy Walk raised millions of dollars towards its fight against Down Syndrome. With nearly 190 marches under its belt, and 2.5 Million dollars in revenue, the Buddy Walk Awareness Program attracted participants from 49 states and five countries.

In 2014, the Buddy Walk raised nearly $13 million with the help of more than 315,000 participants participating in 250 events hosted nationwide.

There is Still Time to Get Involved

Walk in Houston

Each year all the families of Down Syndrome Association of Houston (DSAH) gather up their family and friends to come take part in the Buddy Walk. The event serves as the main awareness program and fundraiser for DSAH, helping the organization to continue to expand programs and services it provides to families.

The Houston Buddy Walk has three primary goals:

  1. To promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome.
  2. To raise funds locally and nationally for education, research and advocacy programs
  3. To enhance the position of the Down syndrome community, enabling us to positively influence local and national policy and practice.

The Houston event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Diamond Lot in Minute Maid Park. Walkers can arrive by 10 a.m. to enjoy rides, live entertainment, the gift shop and a variety of food vendors. The walk will start promptly at 12:30 p.m.
