What to Do if Your Car is Damaged in a Flood

What to Do if Your Car is Damaged in a Flood

Here in Texas, we experience flooding from time to time, and the results can often be devastating. If your car happens to get flooded, don't panic just yet. It may be able to be saved. The general rule of thumb is that a car can be saved if the water level has not reached higher than the floor of the vehicle, but this is not necessarily true in all cases. Your car will need to be examined on an individual basis to determine whether or not it can be fixed.

Can Insurance Cover It?

The answer to this question depends on the level of insurance coverage that you have. Flood damage would fall under the category of comprehensive insurance, so you'll need to have this type of coverage included in your policy. If you have only obtained the bare minimum of liability coverage, flooding will not be covered and you will have to pay for the repairs yourself.

Is It Worth It?

Even if your car can be fixed, it may not be cost-effective to do so. In most cases, the cost of repairs exceeds the value of the vehicle. Only you can decide whether or not it is worth it to you to pay to fix the damage. The experts at your auto body shop can help to assess the damages and give you a cost estimate to help you make your decision.

Will My Car Ever Be the Same?

Even for the most experienced auto body shop, flood damage repair is risky. The damage from flooding can be quite extensive and most of it is not visible to the naked eye. Even after conducting all possible repairs, the likelihood of parts still retaining some damage is high, so they are more likely to fail in the future.

So What Should I Do?

If your car has been flooded, or if you even suspect that it has, do not attempt to start the engine. It is unlikely to work, and even if it does, it can cause severe damage to your engine. Here's what you should do instead:

  • Call your insurance company immediately. If the flooding has been severe in your area, be prepared to wait on hold for a while.
  • Take photos of the damage, preferably while the car is still flooded.
  • Stay away from flooded vehicles that are not your own. During times like these, police are on the lookout for looters and thieves.
