How to Care for Your Car After a Paint Job

How to Care for Your Car After a Paint Job

Once you've chosen the perfect paint job for your car, it's time to protect it; getting your car a killer new paint job is an investment. Not only do you want to ensure that your car looks great for years to come, but you also want it to retain its new value. The best time to start protecting your car's paint job from damage is immediately after getting it painted. Here are some tips to follow:

Wash Your Car Carefully for the First Two Months

Paint takes longer than you think to cure. Though your car will be usable within a matter of days, you should still wash it very carefully for the first two months. Only wash it by hand and don't use any harsh soaps. Avoid waxing or polishing your vehicle for at least three months. Introducing any chemicals during this time could affect the chemical nature of your car's paint job and prevent it from completely hardening.

Always Keep Your Car Covered

Your car should be protected from the elements for at least three months after a new paint job. This includes the sunlight, which can damage paint over time. Keep it parked in covered parking or in the garage and ideally, use it as a little as possible. Though it may be a bit of a time investment, it'll pay off; your new paint job will last years if it's taken care of properly during this period. Keeping your car indoors is the best way to protect it from dirt and birds, as well, as you don't want to use a car cover.

When your car's paint is still hardening, you want to keep yourself to slower roads and highway driving. Avoid country roads, dirt roads and any other roads that are likely to kick rocks up against your car.

Don't Drive on Bad Roads

When your car's paint is still hardening, you want to keep yourself to slower roads and highway driving. Avoid country roads, dirt roads and any other roads that are likely to kick rocks up against your car. A fully hardened paint job can usually deflect quite a bit of debris, but a fresh coat of paint is going to scratch and ding easily; this is especially true because it cannot yet be protected with wax.

Continue Your Maintenance

After the first three months have passed, you can begin taking care of your car's paint job as normal. That means applying a high-quality wax, washing frequently and keeping it covered. Ideally, you should keep your car out of the sun as much as possible, and you should hand wash and hand dry your car when you can. Your car's paint job isn't going to be as vulnerable, but it still needs to be maintained.
