True or False: Do Loud Pipes Save Lives?

True or False: Do Loud Pipes Save Lives?

There has been a long-running saying in the motorcycle industry that "loud pipes save lives." But is this actually true, or is it just something that has been ingrained in us for so long that we automatically believe it? The truth of the matter is that this is just not true. Even with the assumption that louder exhaust means that others on the road will be more alerted to your presence, it is extremely unlikely that this makes a difference in the number of deaths from motorcycle accidents.

The Facts Behind the Myth

Statistically, the majority of motorcycle accidents occur when a car pulls or turns in front of a motorcycle. Because your exhaust is pointed backward, the sound from it is actually being directed behind you. Cars coming from behind you can already see you in their path, so it makes no difference there how loud your exhaust is. The car in front of you, however, does not benefit from the volume level of your exhaust; you are better off signaling with your lights or horn, which are directed towards the front.

Other Ways to Achieve Motorcycle Safety

One instance where louder sound may be able to help you is in your horn. You may wish to upgrade your horn if safety is your main concern in customizing your bike. This way, if a car next to or in front of you starts to encroach on your lane space, you can alert them of your presence with a quick tap of the horn. Wearing bright clothing, rather than the black and other dark colors that so many bikers favor, can make you more visible to others on the road as well. Of course, there is still no substitute for wearing a proper helmet while riding, so make sure that you choose one that will offer the best protection.

The Case in Favor of Louder Exhaust

Just because it is unlikely that louder exhaust will enhance your safety as a rider doesn't mean that you shouldn't still get it if it is something that you would like for your bike. The way that you choose to customize your bike says a lot about your style and who you are as a person, so feel free to set it up in any way that appeals to you. If you love the idea of roaring down the street and turning heads wherever you go, by all means, get that louder exhaust. Just don't expect it to save your life any time soon.
